August 7, 2017
Sister Mary Quintin (Elizabeth) Brickner, age 84, went home to be with the Lord on August 7, 2017 while a resident at Rosary Care Center, Sylvania, Ohio.
Growing up on the farm gave Elizabeth Ann a healthy sense of life and a clear vision of God’s loving touch. Born of Rose Agatha and Joseph Brickner in Fostoria, Elizabeth joined her six brothers and three sisters in the warmth and shared business of a rural household.
After one year of education at St. Wendelin’s Elementary School, the family moved to Liberty, OH where she went to a one room schoolhouse, St. Andrew’s, until her graduation from the eighth grade. During her sophomore year at Jackson High School, she decided to enter the Notre Dame Aspirant School and attended Notre Dame Academy in Toledo.
After her entrance into the convent in August of 1951, she was given the name of Sister Mary QuintIn. Sister received her BA degree from Mary Manse, Toledo, which prepared her for her long and beloved outreach in education. For sixteen years she touched the lives of children in the elementary schools of: St. Paul, Norwalk, St. Joseph, Maumee, St. John, Delphos; Sacred Heart, Fremont; St. Wendelin, Fostoria; St. Mary, Leipsic; St. Michael Ridge, Defiance; and Gesu, St. James and Christ the King in Toledo.
However, love for the missions became obvious when she volunteered to travel to Papua New Guinea and join other sisters in that far away country. She spent thirty-eight years teaching Home Economics to the girls at Notre Dame High School in Kumdi, homemaking skills to the women at Maria Qwin in Banz, and she also trained catechists for work in the schools in Goroka and Hagen. In 2002 she returned to the States and took up residence at the Provincial Center of the Sisters of Notre Dame. When her health began to fail and she needed more care, she was transferred to Rosary Care Center, Sylvania, Ohio where she died in the early morning of August 7.
Those who preceded her in death besides her parents are her sister Catherine, and her brothers: Jerome, Louis, Mark, and Joseph. Left to mourn her passing are her sisters Theresa Streacker, Findlay, Ohio and Mary Agatha Hassanein of Laguna Niguel, California; and her brothers, Albert (Dolores) in Tampa, Florida, and John (Louisa) in Tiffin, Ohio along with the Sisters of Notre Dame in the Toledo Province.
