In the morning of Monday, November 6, Sister Mary Audrey Kreuz completed her earthly journey, having spent her last weeks at the Ursuline Center, Toledo. Formerly known as Sister Mary Leona, Sister Mary Audrey, 87, was born on May 11, 1930, the third of eight children born to John and Leona (Langenderfer) Kreuz. Sister grew up on a farm in Swanton, Ohio, where she developed hobbies of gardening, sewing and cooking. Having attended school at Immaculate Conception Marygrove and Notre Dame Academy, Sister Audrey began her formal training as a Sister of Notre Dame in August 1948.
Obtaining her BA degree in Home Economics and Education at Mary Manse College, Sister received a master’s degree in Elementary Education at Catholic University of America. Carmel, Carmel, IN. Sister’s specialty was teaching junior high students, especially preparing them for the sacrament of Confirmation and showing interest in their activities.
Energetic, caring, and determined, she filled leadership roles on the Diocesan Pastoral Council and Toledo Diocesan Assembly. Throughout her years of semi and active retirement Sister tutored at Notre Dame Academy, Read for Literacy Program, and Women Blessing Women Program.
Despite surgeries and much pain over a number of years Sister spent herself in service to the community.
