“The seventy-two returned rejoicing, and said, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.’ Jesus said, ‘I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky. Behold, I have given you the power to ‘tread upon serpents’ and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
Notice how Jesus’ responds to the disciples’ surprise upon returning from their mission.
Jesus is not so impressed with their success as He reminds them of the deeper reality of their eternal reward.
Pray for the grace to walk on the side of Jesus and be aware of what on earth you are doing for heaven’s sake.
Heritage word—“Walking that ‘extra mile’ with Jesus will surely reduce our persistent stress and tensions, our anxieties and fears, our blindness and deafness to the cry of the poor . . . bringing new life and hope.”
